Dear Walnut Square Families,
I hope this letter finds you well as you prepare for the upcoming storm this weekend. Please be advised that due to the weather forecast, the PTO has postponed our Mr. Mike’s Restaurant Night to Monday, February 9th. Before the storm hits, many of you will be running errands…don’t forget to make a stop at the Haverhill Public Library! While you are hunkering down at home, it’s the perfect time to enjoy a few good books!
Speaking of great books, I am thrilled to announce the upcoming Caldecott Reading Challenge at Walnut Square! The Caldecott Medal is the highest honor a picture book can receive in the United States, awarded annually since 1938 to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. Whether it’s the famous gold seal of the winner or the silver seal of an “Honor” book, these awards represent the finest artwork in children’s literature. The 2026 winner will be officially announced by the American Library Association on Monday, January 26th. Stay tuned for more specific details about our school challenge next week!
Finally, please take a moment to review the upcoming MCAS dates listed in the “Mark Your Calendar” section below. We will continue to update the calendar as more events are scheduled throughout the school year. Stay safe and warm this weekend!
Sincerely,
Jen Rubera
Principal

Superstars Theme of the Month for January: Respect.
Throughout the month, our classrooms will focus on what it means to be a “Respectful Superstar.” We will be exploring how we treat ourselves, our peers, and our environment with kindness and consideration.
SUPERSTARS Theme of the Month: RESPECT
What is Respect?
At school, we define respect as treating others the way you want to be treated. It is the understanding that every person- and every object- has value. Being respectful means:
- Listening when others are speaking.
- Using kind words and a calm voice.
- Asking before borrowing something.
- Accepting and celebrating our differences.
Supporting Respect at Home
You are your child’s first and most important teacher! Here are a few simple ways to reinforce this month’s theme at home:
- Model the Behavior: Children watch how we interact with neighbors, retail workers, and family members. Using “please” and “thank you” consistently sets a powerful example.
- The “Pause” Technique: Encourage your child to pause and think before they speak: “Is what I’m about to say kind?”
- Narrate Respectful Moments: When you see your child handling a toy gently or waiting their turn, name it! “I noticed how respectfully you treated your sister’s drawing.”
January Reading List: Stories of Respect
We encourage you to visit the library or check your bookshelves for these wonderful titles that explore different facets of respect:
- I Choose to Be Respectful by Elizabeth Estrada
- My Respectful Robot by Melanie Acker
- A Bug and a Wish by Karen Scheuer
- Enemy Pie by Derek Munson
- Don’t Touch My Hair! by Sharee Miller
- Tease Monster: A Book About Teasing vs. Bullying by Julia Cook
- Do Unto Otters: A Book About Manners by Laurie Keller
- The Crayon Box That Talked by Shane DeRolf
- Treat Me Right! by Nancy Loewen
- Everyone Matters by Pat Thomas
- Ease the Tease by Judy S. Freeman and Mimi P. Black
We look forward to seeing our Superstars grow in kindness and respect this month!
