Family Update

Dear Families,

It was wonderful to welcome everyone back this week after a refreshing spring recess, and we enthusiastically embrace the month of May!  While this time of year often brings a flurry of activities and events, it’s also a significant opportunity to focus on well-being, as May is Mental Health Awareness Month.  We are committed to fostering a supportive and understanding environment where mental health is recognized as an integral part of overall health and academic success.

As the spring season unfolds, bringing with it renewed energy and growth, I want to emphasize the continued importance of consistent daily school attendance for all our students. The academic progress made throughout the year builds steadily, and each day of engagement in the classroom provides crucial learning opportunities. Active participation in lessons, collaborative work with peers, and consistent exposure to the curriculum are fundamental to reinforcing skills and fostering a deeper understanding of concepts. Your partnership in ensuring regular attendance is invaluable as we work together to maximize your child’s educational success during these final, important months of the school year.

Before you know it, it’s almost time to begin the Walnut Square Alphabet Calendar:  Sprinting Through Spring! Beginning on Wednesday, May 7th, our alphabet calendar offers an exciting and engaging way to build connections within the school community while emphasizing mental health awareness and promoting fun. Each day is thoughtfully designed with activities that encourage participation and foster a sense of belonging among students, teachers, and families.  By incorporating themes that focus on mindfulness, kindness, and self-expression, such as “Mindful Moments Day” and “Kindness Day,” the calendar creates a supportive environment where students can openly discuss feelings and experiences. This approach not only raises awareness about mental health but also equips students with important social-emotional skills that contribute to their overall well-being.  The fun, themed days—like Crazy Hair Day, Pajama Day, and Ice Cold Treat Day—stimulate excitement and enthusiasm for attending school. Engaging, hands-on activities encourage students to express themselves creatively and socially, making school a place where they want to be. This not only boosts attendance but also enhances engagement in learning. As students connect with one another through shared laughter and enjoyment, they develop friendships that can alleviate stress and promote a positive school climate.  Please click on one of the links below to view the flyer.

As the spring season gets busy, reading every night with your child is very important.    It helps improve their vocabulary, comprehension skills, and overall academic performance. Additionally, reading fosters a love of literature and encourages critical thinking.  To support this essential habit, I invite all Superstars to complete the Superstar Book Review. By filling out this log, you will contribute to a wonderful resource for our school community that will inspire others to read!  Please use the following link to complete the form after reading each book: https://forms.gle/iDTbdMb6mkwBkmAu6.  Thank you for participating and promoting the love of reading!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Jen Rubera
