Family Update

Principal’s Post

Dear Families,

As the schoolyear winds down, we have been so busy!  This week, Superstars continued to follow the alphabet calendar. Please check our school’s Facebook and/or Instagram (@walnutsquaresuperstars) to see pictures and reels!  Alphabet Calendar:  Please click here to read the calendar in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

On Wednesday, we had a visit from Ms. Megan from the Haverhill Public Library Children’s Room.  She shared the summer reading information and some of the awesome summer programming they planned.  I’m really excited about the event where you can visit with goats!  For more information about the Haverhill Public Library, please visit https://haverhillpl.org/.  Another great resource to check out is the Haverhill Promise website.  There is a summer calendar which has all of the fun activities you can do around Haverhill with your family!   https://www.haverhillpromise.com/summercalendar2024.  For other resources about summer learning opportunities, please visit https://www.haverhill-ps.org/summer-learning-opportunities/.

This week was also an opportunity to recognize our Peace Poetry published poets!  On Wednesday there was a ceremony at NECC, and yesterday evening our Superstars had the opportunity to read their poems at the School Committee meeting.  This morning a former Walnut Square alumni named Allen called Walnut Square to tell us that he watched the School Committee meeting last night and was so impressed with the Peace Poetry presentation!

In addition to all of the fun activities planned, students are completing End-of-Year assessments.  Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn and connect to peers and their teachers and staff at Walnut Square.  Our attendance for May has been great!  Our current attendance rate is 94.8%.  Thank you so much for making attendance a priority!

Haverhill Public Schools is having an attendance “Spring Challenge.”  This May to encourage everyone to end the year strong, all K-8 schools will challenge students to attend daily on time each day. Those students who make it all 22 days will receive a special “Spring Challenge” reward.  Please continue to encourage your child to attend school on time every day unless medically excused, and please reach out if we can support you in any way.  To read the Attendance Matters Letter, please click below.

There is no school on Monday, May 27th in observance of Memorial Day.   To honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice,  there is a parade on Monday.  I have included information about it from yesterday’s Haverhill Gazette below.  I also would like to share some of my favorite picture books and resources that help students learn about the significance of Memorial Day:

I hope these resources help your family honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the US military.

Sincerely,

Jen Rubera

Principal

Memorial Day Parade Information by Mike LaBella from the 5/23/24 Haverhill Gazette:
