Haverhill Book Buddies

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are very pleased to welcome your third grade student into the Haverhill Book Buddies Program!  The program launched in 2021 at Silver Hill Elementary School and it was so successful that it has expanded to include all third graders in Haverhill public schools.

What is a Book Buddy? It is a program where each student is matched up with a volunteer book buddy in the community.  Over the course of the school year, the volunteer will send 3 books and letters to your child.  These books are gifts for each child to keep, and the letters encourage the student as they develop their reading skills. Students will practice their letter writing skills by corresponding with their “buddy” after each round of books.  All communication takes place entirely through the letters, similar to a traditional pen pal program. Students and buddies do not meet in person.

Every few months, new books will arrive in the classroom with letters that have been screened and approved by the Book Buddies team. The program takes place during the course of the normal school day, so no extra work at home. 

This was a terrific experience for students in previous years and we are excited for our journey with the Haverhill Book Buddies to begin again!
