Family Update

Dear Families,

I hope everyone is staying warm!  Superstars continue to learn and grow, and we are getting ready to celebrate our 100th day of school on Monday, February 13th!  The 13th is also the day that we begin celebrating our “Spread the Love of Reading” spirit week and hope you will celebrate with us!  Here are the days:

Spread the Love of Reading Spirit Week:

  • Monday, February 13th:  100th Day of School/Spread the Love Monday:  Wear a shirt or hat with a positive message. **Please see updates from each classroom about the 100th day of school.
  • Tuesday, February 14th:  Friendship Day:  Wear red or pink.
  • Wednesday, February 15th: Wacky Wednesday:  Wear mismatched clothes.
  • Thursday, February 16th:  Hats off to Reading:  Wear a funny hat or headband.
  • Friday, February 17th:  Snuggle Up and Read:  Wear your pajamas to school.

How do we “spread the love” of reading here at Walnut Square?  We have been working hard to give opportunities for students to read high quality texts!  Our librarian, Mrs. Greene, has been working hard to curate books that students would like to check out to read at home.  Please look for the books in your student’s backpack.   Your help with getting the library books returned is greatly appreciated!  Here are the days the classrooms visit the library:

  • Monday:  Ms. Luttig
  • Tuesday:  Ms. Caruso and Mrs. Hughes
  • Wednesday:  Mrs. Sanchez
  • Thursday:  Mrs. O’Leary and Ms. Bird
  • Friday:  Mr. Bailey and Mrs. Abreu

Most of our Superstars have completed the i-Ready Reading Diagnostic and the i-Ready Math Diagnostic.  Makeups are being completed now.  After all assessments are completed, we will share their progress with you.  I am so proud of how hard our Superstars have been working!

Our “Lost and Found” space is filled with items that haven’t been claimed.  If your child is missing something, please visit us and take a look!  Any items not claimed by February 17th will be donated.

Our PTO has been working hard to fundraise and support enrichment opportunities at Walnut Square!  The PTO meeting was held this past Wednesday.  The minutes can be found here:  https://walnutsquare.haverhill-ps.org/pto/.   A few highlights from the meeting are:

  • The PTO has purchased items for activities for the 100th day of school as well as for friendship day (Valentine’s Day) and will also be ordering t-shirts for all staff and students.
  • The PTO is hosting a restaurant fundraiser on Wednesday, February 8th at Mother Cluckers on Primrose St.  This is a half day at school, and all day at Mother Cluckers, 20% of sales either dine-in or takeout only will be donated to the Walnut Square PTO. Please note that this does not include Uber Eats/Grub Hub/etc.  Thank you for your support!
  • If You Give a Teacher a Pizza Raffle is going on now!  Flyers were sent home.
  • PTO will be hosting a Read-a-thon fundraiser.  Notices will be going home the week of February 13th.
  • There will be a Music Bingo night at the Haverhill Elks on Saturday, March 4th.  This fundraising event is for adults only. Thanks to the generous donation of Ryan Ricci and Adam Desmarais (Haverhill High alumni), 100% of the proceeds will benefit Walnut Square!  Flyers will be going home next week if you’d like to reserve a table for a fun night out while raising money for Walnut Square!

Kindergarten registration has opened!  Please click here to learn more and to register your child!

As with all family updates, this will be posted on our school website, https://walnutsquare.I-ps.org/ and sent to you via School Messenger and Remind.  In addition to the Walnut Square School website, you can also “like” our Facebook page, Walnut Square Elementary School, and follow us on Instragram @walnutsquaresuperstars to get updates and see all of the fun and learning taking place at Walnut Square!   Please contact me if you have any questions.
