Walnut Square Elementary School
Weekly Update- March 14, 2021
Pool Testing results for Week of March 8th-March 12th: Negative!
In Person/RLA Surveys: Please complete ONLY if you have not already completed it.
Haverhill Public Schools are increasing our In-Person Learning opportunities. We hope to begin expanding learning time with our youngest students first and incrementally adding more in-person learning time for older students in the coming weeks. This comes in response to the request of our families and due to guidance from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) which determined that elementary schools should shift to in-person learning five days a week beginning in April. As such we will begin to phase out the hybrid learning model beginning with Kindergarten and grade one.
As of now we know that mask wearing, hand washing, and pooled COVID-19 surveillance testing will continue. Social distance will be a minimum of 3 feet between desks and transportation will have assigned seats with 2 students to a bench.
We ask that you fill out the survey once for each child and that you carefully consider your choice as staffing may shift based on the choices of families.
Please note this survey is for this current school year, and all changes are contingent upon our continued decline in the rate of COVID-19 in our community.
Grade K-1 Only: The survey will be open for one week until March 15th
Grade 2 Only: The survey will be open for one week until March 17th

Look for these words while reading on Learning A-Z and Epic! In Writing, students will continue sharing their opinions. In Math, we will continue exploring teen numbers. Finally, in Science, we will learn about signs of Spring!
Kindergarten friends had so much fun dressing up like they were 100 years old for the 100th day of School last week. Thank you everyone!
Grade 1 Update
We hope everyone enjoys the extra hour of light at night and hopefully more spring-like weather. In Letterland we will be learning about words with ee and e_e and review words with a_e, i_e, o_e and u_e. We will begin a new topic in math on using models and strategies to add tens and ones. We continue with using the DICE protocol for problem solving. Our writing this week will be a combination of “How To” stories and writing about our favorite St. Patrick’s Day books. We will also be talking about rainbows as we look forward to Spring!
Grade 2 Update
What wonderful weather we had towards the end of the last week. The children were able to finally enjoy some springlike weather. Children continue to work hard and participate in class. In math, we will be working on adding and subtracting three-digit numbers with regrouping (borrowing/carrying). Math journals are completed every Friday (Mrs. Sanchez’s class) or Tuesday (Ms. Caruso’s class). We will be learning about Katherine Johnson and why she is an important American in Social Studies. In preparation of St. Patrick’s Day, we will be reading and writing leprechaun stories. Contraction action will begin this week as well. Make sure to attend the remote Walnut Square School Read-A-Thon which is posted on our Google classroom with the link! Remember….Readers become Leaders!
K: Students in K will be working with Boomwhackers and steady beat this week. Last week we played through “Day-O” and Popcorn! K students read and played color coded graphic notation (picture music!) We also worked on practicing expected behaviors and etiquette with classroom instruments.
First Grade: Students in first grade will be working on original boomwhacker compositions using color coding. We will be exploring how to use steady beat to help our compositions. We are also using a free website called playxylo.com to help with our writing! (Check it out, its SUPER fun)
Second Grade: Students in second grade are finishing up our original boomwhacker compositions and will be offering 2+2 feedback on compositions to help improve our work. We’ve also been exploring beat using a website called https://www.incredibox.com/ (this one is super fun too!)
Ukuleles for Walnut Square: Donors Choose Campaign
Please check out our Donors Choose page to get a classroom set of Ukuleles. These will give students a new and safe way to explore music! I’ve been running adult and child ukulele classes for the past 8 years using a color-coded system so that all students can access these instruments. Please consider sharing this link on your social media platforms to help us get these instruments for the kiddos!Thank you in advance!
