ACCESS Testing Begins March 8, 2021

ACCESS Testing for Walnut Square English Language Learners will start tomorrow, Monday, March 8th and be completed on Friday, March 12th. ACCESS stands for “Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners.” It’s a test that’s given to students from kindergarten to grade 12, to assess their progress in learning English. The test is administered by the WIDA Consortium, and it meets the government’s requirements for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). This act sets forth standards for monitoring a student’s journey towards English proficiency. I have attached a link to a resource published by WIDA for further information on what ACCESS is all about. There are multiple languages, and some videos.

In like a Lion, Out like a Lamb!  This week we will be talking about weather and weather patterns throughout the year.  We will share our expertise on different topics as we learn to write “How-To” stories.  In Letterland, the pairs -ce and ge will be introduced and practiced.  During math time, we will be finishing up with learning about numbers on the 100’s chart and review past topics.  We are looking forward to a fun filled week of learning.

    Grade 2 Update

It appears that March has come in like a lion. The entire month of March will be dedicated toward Dr. Seuss. The students will write a story about the Cat in the Hat visiting their house and an informational paragraph about Theodor Geisel. This of course includes a hands-on project.  We will be adding the third-grade sight word list to their class  writing folder and will send one for home as well. We will be wrapping up irregular plural nouns. Children will be reading a mini-biography about Dr. Seuss. In Social Studies, reading about Sally Ride and Neil Armstrong. Do you know why they are important Americans? During math class, we will continue to explore standard and expanded form. Expect an expanding math monster to come home this week! Take a quick look below at our fantastic  100th Day writing and portraits!
