Walnut Square Elementary School

  • Walnut Square Parent Update – February 7, 2020

Monday, February 10, 2020 is the 100th day of school.  All classrooms will be celebrating, counting and finding patterns within 100.

Next  Friday, February 14th is Valentines Day.  On that day we will be having a Title I event called For the Love of Reading.  Guest readers will read in each classroom and every child will get a furry friend to bring home and read to!

Envision Online Math Resources to Support Students at School and Home

HPS students in grades K-5 use the Envision Math Program. I wanted to share that it has an online resource for students to use at home to practice the skills they learn in school. All students have a log- in and password which allows them to utilize this resource at home.  If you have internet access and would like your child to start to use this wonderful resource at home, please communicate with your child’s teacher and they will provide you with your  student’s log- in and password.

    Ms. Sanchez Grade 2 Class

Ms. Sanchez tried a new strategy in her class this week called Talking Tiles. Students listened to a couple of books about Ruby Bridges and then had to complete the t-chart with facts about her. For the Talking Tile activity students had to choose 4 character traits to describe Ruby and give reason why.The students had a list of words to pick from. Students attempted to record their voices but since they tend to speak softly it was hard to hear. This is a strategy to increase student discourse in class as well as ensuring all students in the group participate. Kudos to Ms. Sanchez for trying different strategies to increase student engagement.

     Slippery Steps

Early this morning I was made aware that the steps on the Main Street side of the school were very slippery this morning. Please know that our custodian had been out there several times this morning sprinkling the ice melt however the rain kept washing it away. Please continue to alert us to anything that needs attention. It is very much appreciated and we will do our best to correct the situation.

News from the Walnut Square PTO

The PTO is looking into getting some type of program to come to Walnut in March.  They will look into the Historical Society Presentations, Joppa Flatts, or a music man like Wayne from Maine, an author/illustrator and possibly book one or two programs for this year.

The PTO is reaching out to people to see who are willing to help with a pasta dinner in April.   If enough volunteers can help, we will have a pasta dinner.  If not, the PTO is looking at hosting a Sweetheart dance like last year.

A sales rep from a fundraising company came to the PTO and promoted his products.  His company sells cookie dough, pies, rolled cakes, danish, etc. He brought samples that were delicious (Leftovers in the fridge–help yourselves).   The PTO decided not to go with that fundraiser only because the product needs to be picked up the day that it is delivered or put in a refrigerator.  That would be a problem as the school does not have a lot of refrigeration space.  The PTO will be hosting a fundraiser in April through Popcornopolis.

The PTO has planned a Panera Bread night to raise money for Walnut Square. school.  It is scheduled for Wednesday, April 8th (Parent Teacher Night).  They are going to do a Five Guys Night, as well but the date has not been confirmed.
