Walnut Square staff hope everyone is off to a fantastic 2020!
Parent Feedback Survey
I want to thank all the parents for completing the Parent Feedback Survey. The feedback we received will help us determine the focus for our school improvement plan.
School Field trip
I would like to remind all parents that our school wide field trip is on Wednesday, January 29th. All students and staff will take a field trip to the Greater Boston Stage company in Stoneham, MA. We will see the play, Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The students are leaving around 10:30 and will arrive back to Walnut Square after 2:00. Students should bring a lunch in a disposable bag on Wednesday and all permission slips should be signed and returned on Monday, January 27th.
News from Grade 2
Mrs. O’Leary’s and Mrs. Sanchez’s classes have begun Topic 8 in math. Topic 8 entails telling time (hour, half-hour, quarter past, quarter to) and money. The children are continuing with ST Math using the Chrome Books.
In Social Studies, we will kick off the week celebrating Chinese New Year and find out our Chinese Zodiac sign according to the year we were born. 2020 is the year of the RAT! We also have begun talking about “Important Americans”, starting with Martin Luther King and Ruby Bridges.
Regarding ELA, we continue responding and writing about texts we have read. A great strategy is the use of a T-chart (graphic organizer) to help organize the students’ thoughts and ideas. The children are so excited about next week’s field trip to the theater!
Mrs. Sanchez implemented a new strategy in her classroom called Talking Tiles- This strategy is used to ensure that all children contribute to the group discussion and increase student discourse. If your child is in Mrs. Sanchez’ class- ask them how they liked using the Talking Tiles.
Dismissal Time for Walkers
Finally, as you all know dismissal time at Walnut Square is 3:15 p.m. for all students. In a review of the data has become increasingly evident that over the past few months there have been more parents coming in to dismiss children 10-15 minutes early, (between 3:00 p.m-3:10 p.m). Between 3:00 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. is an extremely busy time for all staff as we are helping students put on coats, and hats as well as making sure they have their everything they need to go home in their back packs. As well, staff are focused on ensuring the bus students are in the correct bus line and get safely on the correct bus/van and making sure our students that walk are getting picked up by their parent/guardian. I am asking all parents if at all possible, to wait for your child outside until the students are released at 3:15 p.m. When many parents come in between 3:00 p.m-3:10 p.m. to dismiss it can become somewhat chaotic. We all appreciate your help with this.
Have a wonderful week- end!
