Walnut Square Elementary School

  • Principal’s Update- December 13, 2019

This is such an exciting time of year for children young and old. It’s hard to believe how fast December 2019 is going.

Please note Friday, December 20th is a full day of school.

Little Elves Workshop is all next week.  This is an event that gives the students the opportunity to do some holiday shopping for family members.  Students should fill out the form that was sent home with the names of those they will be shopping for.  All items will cost $1.00.  Students can purchase up to 5 gifts.

An imaginary trip to the North Pole is happening on Tuesday afternoon.  Students are encouraged to wear their pajamas to school.  Students will enjoy listening to an audio recording of the story, The Polar Express and will enjoy some hot chocolate and snacks in their classroom.

Grade 2 teachers Ms. O’Leary and Ms. Sanchez wanted to share this update from their classes.   Their students have been learning about different winter holidays and traditions such as Christmas and Hanukkah!  The students’ water painted poinsettia’s after listening to “The Legend of the Poinsettia.” Students are also researching reindeer and creating their own informational books. Another enjoyable project with a writing component was our Gingerbread persuasive paragraphs and Santa’s Vacation fantasy stories. In science, we will be begin our next Stemscope which entails Weathering/Erosion. In Math, we continue with the DICE word problem method, have started using STMath (using Chrome books) and continue two-digit subtraction with regrouping.  We are looking forward to writing about New Year’s Resolutions for 2020!!!

Please join us Thursday, January 9th for the Walnut Square PTO meeting. It starts at 3:30 PM and usually finishes in an hour. New members are always welcome.

The Walnut Square Site Council will be meeting on Wednesday, December 18th from 3:25 pm-4:25 pm in the Walnut Teachers room.

I am continuing to look for lunch monitors that can also help out in classrooms either 10:30-1:30 or 12:00 – 3:00. This is a paid position. If you are interested in helping out at Walnut Square please email me @ bkitsos@haverhill-ps.org

This year we have 2 full weeks for our December vacation. School re-opens Monday, January 6, 2020.

From all the staff at Walnut Square we hope you will have a restful and safe Holiday Season! We look forward to seeing you all  in the  New Year!
